If you don’t want to read about me going on and on, don’t read…
So, wonder why livejournal spazzed. It’s okay, I found other totally non-productive (from a work point of view) things to do. On the other hand, I have printed up like twenty dozen rail maps of Europe. I met up with a friend of mine from HS because she’d just been to Europe last year- tips, whatnot. She’s all art lady and had this crazy huge journal in which she’s pasted like every rail ticket, etc. that she’d bought and incorporated it into her journal. It was so great, so I’m totally copying her and bringing a glue stick along. Mediterranean heat in the middle of summer and a glue stick? Nothing will go wrong there.
This is a bit embarrassing, but I’ve actually spent a good deal of time over the last two days at the Rick Steves’ site, buying a rail pass, etc. He’s so exceptionally annoying on PBS, but actually knows his shit. And it’s a lot easier to take reading his stuff than hearing his voice. But you can tell that most of the people who go to the site are older, white Americans and some of them are a little dumb. There was a bulletin board of scams in various countries, which was actually pretty handy (apparently some French guys buckle bracelets that you can’t get off on women’s wrists and then demand money - that adds a new dimension to ‘keep your hands to yourself’). This one guy from Georgia wrote in and was like:
“God money belts are so useless! We got robbed in Rome, some guy stole my moneybelt and made off, taking with it all of our possessions of importance! I mean, what is the good of them anyway, you can see them from a mile away. I guess I could have tucked it under my clothes, but then I would have had to unbutton my shirt to get at stuff.”
All I can imagine is him in a bright red shirt with his moneybelt surrounding his gut like a huge banner. But I do thank him for sharing.
I’m only talking about all this because I’ve done NOTHING this week. I’m just a bit over it, and by ‘it’ I mean my life here. Just need a bit more of a challenge. I guess I’m going to get it in two weeks. I was booked in this seemingly dodgy hostel, and I just switched. Let’s hope they confirm my cancellation. All these people said they didn’t have lockers and I was going to be in a 3-person room. These rooms are set up with two bunkbeds and a mattress on the floor. All for only $36 a night. And apparently, the shower is just off the room, so the glass door of the shower is all that separates you from your roommates (in my case, strangers). I got robbed last time I was in Italy (my own stupidity, but it was still frustrating), so I’m hoping not to repeat the experience.
