It’s like I’m a friggin newspaper
So, the FCC is slapping Fox with a huge fine for “indecent” material on some reality show. Apparently, they showed bachelors and bachelorettes at strip clubs and people in (read: simulating) various sexual positions. Now, I haven’t seen the show, and that’s largely because I think most of Fox’s content is pretty mind-numbing. But this is the thing I HATE about our culture: the bait and switch. People get told constantly that people go to strip clubs, that they should go unless they’re ‘uptight,’ etc. And then the FCC comes along and starts slapping fines. Now, do I really want to see drunk people with strippers on my TV? Probably not, but I think Fox would have learned that with Nielsen numbers - we don’t need the FCC telling us what is too dirty for us.
The same goes for our kids: Hollywood, et al. scream “SEX, SEX, SEX!!!!!” and then we tell them in school, “Oh Mary Mother of Jesus! Don’t have sex!!!!!!” So what are they supposed to think? I think this kind of mentality that both encourages and shames is responsible for many of our modern-day social ills - namely substance abuse and violence. People are taught to aspire to a physical and sexual ideal that they can never achieve, and are punished with morality if they try. Is it any surprise that they seek something that gives them a little escape (drugs and drinking) or some actual agency/power (violence)?
Changing subject: This is off salon.com - an editorial by a Regan conservative entitled “Why Conservatives Must Not Vote for Bush.” It’s pretty interesting, but I thought there was one passage that really put the whole flip-flop thing much more eloquently than I:
“By his own admission [Bush] doesn’t do nuance and doesn’t read. He doesn’t appear to reflect on his actions and seems unable to concede even the slightest mistake. Nor is he willing to hold anyone else responsible for anything. It is a damning combination. John Kerry may flip-flop, but at least he realizes that circumstances change and sometimes require changed policies. He doesn’t cowardly flee at the first mention of accountability.”
The final debate is on tonight at 9E/8 central. And if you’d like to read the full salon.com article, it’s right here.
In personal news, I had two extremely vivid… well if not sex dreams everything but. But part of one was that certain animals were like sentient, and I was on some team with a bunch of turkeys. That was before the sex - AND it was with a human not any of the sentient animals. Especially not the turkeys. As I recall, it was not an honor to be on the turkey team; they were not particularly bright or skilled.
