When you breed, please select against stupidity
I’m sorry that my lj consists mostly of lame stories about my dog (whose level of sexual excitement still seems awful high for a eunuch) or crazy rants about the government. Which brings me to the topic of inexplicable, fucking intelligent design being taught in numerous public schools this coming year.
Here’s the deal: creationists have moved away from strict creationism and are now purporting so-called “intelligent design” to fill in the ‘holes’ of evolution, saying that some species clearly came out all together – fish with scales and fins, etc. The idea is to present evolution as a theory, and that this is just one other theory.
I think ‘intelligent design’ is bunk, but that’s beside the point. Intelligent design is not supported by empirical research – literally one quote from some woman goes something like, ‘Well, there are holes in Darwin, so since there’s nothing there, we’re just going to put this in.’ I.e., since there’s currently no evidence to support say the development of chameleon eyes, we’re going to believe that it was done by a “designer” [for which there is also no evidence.]
One might say that to believe that evolution must be the reason for the next jump is a matter of faith, but it isn’t because follows logically. If evolution created A, B, and D, it’s not irrational to presume that it also created C, even if you can’t find the link at this point in time. It is, however, a little illogical to presume that if science can explain the link between A and B, but not between B and C then God, or excuse me “a designer,” must have done it. That is based on faith because, unless the designer makes an appearance at a conference, there will never be any way to prove its existence. The entire premise is based on negative space – since the positive can’t be proved, its opposite must be true. That is bad, bad science. Actually, it’s not – it’s just not science at all.
Even people who believe in intelligent design should recognize that it shouldn’t be taught in Science class. There are no hypotheses, no opportunity for the scientific method, no results, no ability for empirical research. It is a matter of faith, and it thus inappropriate for not only Science class, but the public schools as well. Even Charles Krauthammer, god burn his soul or at least his ability to write for the Commentary page, agrees that intelligent design shouldn’t be taught in the classroom. But that has not stopped the fearless leader and numerous states from championing it. One state, I think it’s Ohio, is actually changing its definition of the word “science” to accommodate it.
I wish there were a designer. Clearly an intelligent one would smite them all. Bad for the species.
