Conversations with my six-year old nephew
Last night:
You have one new voicemail…
heycanyousponsormeinthewalkathon. bye
Sunday
Me: Hello?
Dylan: Is this you, Aunt B?
Me: Yes, Dylan. What’s going on?
Dylan: You called me.
Me: True. Do you want to go see Curse of the Wererabbit with me? It’s the new Wallace and Gromitt movie.
Dylan: [suddenly excited] Ooh! I saw an advertisement for that on television!
Me: Okay, well, would you like to go see it?
Dylan: Is Nana coming?
Me: Nana’s in Ireland, so it’ll just be our date.
Dylan: [blasé again] Oh, okay. Yeah, sure. We can go now. [his mother
says something in the background] Oh, I’ve got to see some cat at 3:30.
So we have to be back before then.
Me: Why don’t we try to do it another day then?
Dylan: Okay, but I can’t go during school.
Me: I probably won’t take you out of school just to see a movie.
Dylan: Oh, okay then.
I should note that any excitement on this child’s part is not Cool! My aunt’s taking me to a movie! it’s Cool! I’m going to see something advertised on television! He generally treats both my father and I with casual indifference. If Nana’s not doing it, it’s probably not worth doing.
