Seasons of (Self) Love
The AV Club’s Commentary Tracks of the Dammed is pretty much my favorite thing ever. This week’s featured RENT the audaciously horrible film version of the Broadway classic.
It’s really clear, even from what the AV Club pulls, that Anthony Rapp (Mark) is pointing out errors in the film, while Adam Pascal (Roger) and Chris Columbus (director) continuously vomit rainbows about it. Pascal’s, “Stop asking so many questions!” is definitely directed at him. Then again, Adam benefited from Columbus’ direction with an awesometastic haircut and a fun day of hamming it up in the desert. Anthony Rapp, it appears, mostly stood on top of the building and questioned why Roger and Mark would throw a trash can fire out the window when they’re cold. Or, say, why no one ever explains why they’re living there rent free. Or why much of the sung dialogue is spoken. Or why the action of the first act takes place over a week instead of one night, bemusing alert members of the viewing audience.
This is auspicious timing for the AV Club, as the film was brought up over coffee last night. I managed to stop the convo before I hyperventilated, but it was close. When is Hollywood going to stop letting this trash monger ‘direct’ films? Especially when he’s so aggressively mastabatory about his own work?
