Basic Math
From the AP:
“In the first 17 days of July, at least 617 Iraqis have been killed in war-related violence, at least 527 civilians and 90 police and security forces, according to an AP count. In the nearly two months since the unity government took office on May 20, more than 1,850 Iraqis have been killed, including at least 1,585 civilians and 267 security forces. The figures do not include insurgents.”
Okay, let’s do the math on that. 617 divided by 17 is 32.29 per day. I’m counting security forces because they certainly didn’t ask for this shit.
Wait, but that figure doesn’t include the 53 killed this morning as they looked for work:
“The attacker drove a minivan to where Shiite laborers gather daily to look for work in Kufa, 100 miles south of Baghdad. He offered them jobs, loaded the minivan with volunteers and then detonated the vehicle, Najaf Gov. Asaad Abu Kalal told a Shiite television station.”
Okay, so that makes it 37.22 per day. Then again, some of the 105 injured this morning proabably won’t make it, so that figure could be higher.
A conversation with my father the other day yielded the following comment: “There’s going to have to be some nature of authoritarian government in Iraq.” I suggested that the man he might be looking for was currently awaiting convictions on crimes against humanity.
How many innocent Iraqis were killed under Hussien’s regime? How many have been killed since? If the lines cross on the graph, can we please ITMFA?
