Today in the News
A great deal of dumb crap.
Todd Stroger will replace his father, John Stroger, on the ballot in November. That brings the total of Republicans I’ll be voting for in November to two.
Tony Snow is generally a big jerk to Helen Thomas, including saying that she’s speaking from the Hezbollah point of view and telling her to get her facts straight about a UN resolution… Unsurprisingly, she has her facts straight.
Of the three stem-cell bills passed by Congress this week, President Bush will likely veto the only meaningful one. Why? As Tony Snow put it, “The simple answer is he thinks murder’s wrong.” Even though a majority of Americans support stem-cell research, with a paucity of votes for an override in Congress, our tax dollars will almost certainly not be spent as we would like.
Luckily, President Bush and Congress have found other things to spend our money on, including $1 million for Snowflakes, an agency that encourages couples to “adopt” “pre-born” “children.” Or put another way, couples can receive the least viable embryos left over from another couple’s procedures. Sure, it has a very low success rate, but it is a lovely way to politicize something already done by most in-vitro clinics.
Although former Chicago police officers tortured individuals in custody, they will not be charged with crimes. Now, where have I heard about that before?
Finally, what more is there to say about the Middle East?
Well, at least Iraq is out of the news. Or is it? Ironic sentiment of the day: “US Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson has in the past two days cautioned Turkey not to take any unilateral steps in northern Iraq and has instead called for cooperation in ridding northern Iraq of the PKK.” Unilateralism is bad. We went in with a coalition.
