Harris on the Ballot
The toothy Secretary of State that certified the 2000 Florida election results for Bush before the votes were counted is at it again. She’s managed to win her Republican primary, “despite the best efforts of party heavyweights who begged the former election official not to run.” Wonderful.
Although she managed to take the primary, she still lags 30 points behind her Democratic challenger. What else do we know about Katherine Harris?
“She recently provoked an uproar when she dismissed the separation of church and state and told a Baptist publication that ‘if you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin.’
The strongest enthusiasm for Harris seems to be among the bloggers and comedians who delight in ridiculing her tight clothing and flirtatious manner.”
Those seem to be incongruous, but whatever. The legislating sin quote is from an interview with the Florida Baptist Witness. It’s a pretty interesting interview, but there is one simply wonderful moment - and it’s not the one above. The Witness asks,
Is there something wrong with Florida and federal statutes when a severely brain-damaged woman who’s not in the process of dying can be starved and dehydrated to death by her husband with the assistance of the courts?
Do you have a follow up?
Yes. Is it wrong to kill gays because they’re dirty and going to Hell? And just one more… Should women be jailed after having abortions, which murders the babies God and their men planted in them? What if they’re not married at the time?
Anyway, good luck to Katherine Harris. May she perform just as well as Jeb Bush thinks she will, which is poorly
