You’ll Make a Man of Me Yet
I’m in a fantastic mood. I saw The History Boys yesterday, and spent my entire car ride this morning listening to ‘This Charming Man’ on repeat. Despite forming a small crush on yet another Andrew (playing Lockwood) and Paul Bettany’s lost brother (Stephen Campbell Moore), the movie mostly made me want to see the play. The film seemed more like sketches from the play; I feel like it lost some of the intimacy it must have on the stage. There were a bunch of times where I was thinking, Wow. This is really good acting. Why is he so upset, though? So, if I can get hottix in NYC, that’s what I’ll be doing.
Speaking of The Smiths, I derive great pleasure from watching people do ridiculous things in their cars. Therefore, I think I would really love driving next to myself. Usually, I’m belting out musical numbers - eyes wide (or closed), mouth agape, decidely strange facial features, and, from afar, the supposition that I must be talking to myself. Today, though I was smiling, snapping, clapping, singing, and actually car dancing to The Smiths. Utterly ridiculous - I hope my obscene aping amused some passerby.

Mike took me to see “The History Boys” for my birthday. It’s a really exceptional play, and while I’m intensely curious about the film version, I’m sure it won’t live up to its staged predecessor. For instance, the play breaks the fourth wall throughout; several of the leading characters speak directly to the audience at some length, and I can’t imagine that happens in the movie. If you want, we can storm the TKTS booth while you’re in town.
