Oh Snap! and the Sociology of Journalism
Man, journalism theorists who don’t like each others’ work are harsh! Check it out:
For present purposes, I shall focus on how to the role of sources is conceptualized by means of the concept of ‘primary definers’ [he means: Hall, et al. 1978], one widely employed in a spirit of uncritical emulation, with little attention being paid to its deep flaws.
Wow. Can you say, “Snap!?!?!”
I did, in the margins.
The author, Phillip Schlesinger, later goes on to say:
Thus, in British work the lobby model as a central focus has been applied to other areas of institutional activity - quite rightly, because that is how things work.
This, naturally, caused me to to write “ha ha” in the margin. I then drew an arrow to the “ha ha” from the end of the paragraph where he cited his own work as an example of this truism.
All in all, it’s been a thrilling evening. And now morning.
Confidental to P. Schlesinger: Please don’t reverse-google and yell at me.
