I read the Huffington Post every day. They’ve got a good rundown since I’m effectively nine hours behind the U.S. news cycle. I sent them an email a while back over the weirdest thing, though - I defended Ann Coulter. After her latest rant about whatever HuffPost ran this
with an illustration of a harpy. Which is funny because it has the byline as the NYT and you can click on “Whole Article,” which takes you a NYT story that refers to her as “Conservative Author.” I dislike her as much as the next person, but men who make disgusting comments are rarely personified as flying bitches from hell.
But maybe it’s more of a trend. Take, for example, this picture, which is currently running on their front page:
I reduced it in size quite a bit, but I think you can see the difference in the ways the three candidates are represented. Obama is glowing, Edwards looks a bit smarmy, but handsome and Clinton looks… not so amazing. This is the second time this week alone, and I’ve seen it before, where they appear to have been unable to find a flattering picture of Clinton when comparing her with other candidates.
Now maybe HuffPost staffers just can’t find any equally flattering pictures of the candidate. Maybe they’ve decided to back Obama or Edwards with semiotics. But for a publication run by a woman there have been a number of seemingly anti-woman issues over the last couple months. I don’t know who I plan to back in the primary, but I’d hate to see Clinton attacked over her looks and not the issues. It happens all the time (anyone remember Dawn Clark Netch in IL?) and it is really an element that should be taken out of our politics.
Because, really, other than this everything is going so well. Um, fuck. Enjoy the testimony today, though, guys. Look for the vein in Senator Leahy’s neck.
