Goodnight, Sweet Prince
It’s been nice knowing you. Over the last two and a half years (and longer as White House Counsel), your undying commitment to country, liberty and good taste have made you a joy to watch.
Another way of saying ‘goodnight’ is bon frickin’ soir.
Ha. Timestamp on the NYT reads 13 minutes ago (or 9:05am EST) - and Wikipedia article on Gonzales has already been modified to read 24 August as his resignation date. (Must be a busy morning over there at the NYT - at least it didn’t read jerk, jerk, jerk…jerk.)
Chertoff’s name is being thrown about as the likely replacement for Gonzales, making this most interesting:
Senator Schumer said that “Democrats will not obstruct or impede a nominee who we are confident will put the rule of law above political considerations.”
It’s the last sentence in the article; the hard news inverted pyramid says that you put items in descending order of importance. I think it’s in the wrong place - Schumer’s been angry as hell for months and this seems like a good time for the Democrats to make a stand. Another ‘loyal Bushie’ is probably going to have the Senate tied up for weeks. Fun!
And what’s with another Monday morning resignation? He resigned on Friday, day o’the newsdump, and they waited until Monday to announce it. What on Earth is going on in the White House? This is pretty basic stuff - not that I want to wave my “something’s going on” flag again.
Not that Bush might try a recess appointment, what with Congress being on vacay until August 31 and all. He never abuses that power.
Update: Bush and the Senate apparently made a deal whereby Bush wouldn’t appoint anyone during the break. And apparently Schumer is possibly okay with Chertoff. Bizarre.
Ha. He didn’t take any questions at the press conference. He wouldn’t have recalled anything anyway.
Update II: TPM is saying that some might be mobilizing to get Bush to make a recess appointment. I mean, they’re right - after Scooter Libby, who can say if he’ll honor his commitment to the Senate?

Does it make you happy that your blog is the first place I looked when I heard the news on the radio?

Personally, it thrills. From the point of view of objectivity and the world, my heart quietly weeps.

I thought you may say something like that. I was a little disturbed myself…
