Yeah - it's pretty depressing.

Apparently, you can also be as big of a racist as you want when you're drunk. The N-word only counts if you say it when your sober. You know, the way it's not rape if you were too drunk to listen to her say, 'no.'

Brie, thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it and it really creeped me out. If you tip enough you can be as big of a racist as you want.

um...while I understand some of the self-exploration for which mr gutters is arguing, my gut reaction was shame. It made me feel like crying.

ah it is ( i watched it at home, I couldn't get it at work). Where was this blowing up? I saw it posted on a couple boards today. Anyway, I think everybody is missing the point.

I have always thought that the mission of This American Life was to show us how we are all alike good or bad despite seemingly dissimilar situations on the surface, and how we all have this shared culture weather we think we are unique and beautiful snowflakes or one of the herd.

This segment is the same way, you should watch it not to say, hey those people suck, I'm totally not part of that, you should say what part of me is represented here. Because yes this is your an my culture and a part of our experience whether we are direct participants or merely on the perfiery. What part of this is representative of my own american life, do I go to the south side? not really for anything other than short trips. Why is that? Should that change? Is that something I can change, etc. It should open you up to new questions you ask your self rather than creating new divisions such as, I'm never going to Lincoln park again.

I'm not picking on you, rather your response is the one I've seen over and over today and it peeves me off because on one hand it's totally correct, but on the otherhand it is missing the point and the self examination. I really cannot believe that the point of this was to make a lincoln park resident hit piece. When I see comments that say that's racist, well yes, but that's only the surface of what they are trying to tell in this story. I think the radio does a better job of helping the audience take that next step than the show because of the timeframe.

Also, I think TAL is the most important show in all media so I'm bias :)

Is this the weiners circle episode? That was in the first or second episode of the first season, it was actually a redone radio story from a few years back. The circle got it's start when LP was a pretty skeevy neighborhood, In the 70s it was the cheap old town, and that's not saying much since Old Town was the hippie neighborhood as well. This guy I know from Old Town School lived in LP in the 80s for $200 a month.
