Bhutto Assassinated in Pakistan
Former prime minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed during a rally today. The elections are only two weeks away, and her party is now leaderless. The state of emergency was just lifted a few days ago. No word yet on whether the elections will go forward or if the lockdown will be reinstated. What a nightmare.
In other (the same) news, have a look at the picture the NYT is running at the top of the story. Injured man in the foreground, and in the background a dead person surrounded by blood with their pants blown off. Lying next to him is a similarly naked and bloodied corpse. Ah, the dignity afforded those victims. That’s totally how it would have been handled if they were American.
Update: TPM has one of Bhutto’s advisors saying it seemed like a hit. Apparently she was shot in the neck. Obviously unsubstantiated at this point, but it’s difficult to believe that this isn’t a plus for Musharraf’s tenuous grip on the country. Even if it was unrelated to the government, someone did him a tremendous favor. Again - just nightmarish.
