Iowa: Devil’s Playground (Caucus)
I am going to Iowa tomorrow to observe the corporeal voting of (no doubt, a goodly number of) corpulent Midwestern Democrats.
Roadtrip!
But! How relevant is teh Iowas?
Or rather - how fair?
You’re talking about very white (91-96%), largely rural state with two million registered voters. In a good year about 6-10% of them participate in the caucus. With open elections on both sides, I’d guess that this year is going to be higher (especially as it’s going to be a bit warmer with no snow tomorrow).
To sum up, about 100,000 white farmers (per party) are setting the stage for what is sure to be another insanely short primary process. Christopher Hitchens is not impressed.
And Iowa is also bad news on the ‘noun, verb, 9/11′ front. Ron Paul - against everything holy - has pulled ahead of 9u11ani. Granted Rudy isn’t making much of an effort in Iowa and New Hampshire, saving his strength for Super Tuesday (which, if Romney flames out this week, might actually wind up being a good strategy), but still. The Paul campaign doesn’t even understand basic grammar.
But the real Iowa question du jour is can Huckaboo recover from his Monday morning press conference? The media is so over you trying to get them to run your attack ad for you, Mr Governor. That’s so 1996 - hence the chorus of laughter. And my complete lack of linkage.
It’s going to be awesome if he self-destructs before the primary. At least Dean went out with a scream.
The reason I’m really going, however, is to see if Alan Keyes can pull off a repeat of his sensational third place showing in the 2000 Iowa primary. 14%! Fourteen percent of Iowan Republicans wanted Alan Keyes as president.
I’m hoping for a strong showing of ‘Uncommitted’ on the Democratic side. How much would that just thoroughly piss everyone off!
