Apt Amendments

In case you haven’t heard, the newest iteration of the Federal Marriage Amendment was re-introduced to Congress this week.

The amendment would, of course, protect the sacred institution of marriage from the destructive ways of teh homos and their big gay marriages.

The obvious need for such an amendment is given extra patriotic flare through the sponsorship of our nation’s two staunchest defenders of sacred unions, Senators Larry Craig and David Vitter.

Larry Craig (R-ID), as you may remember, sprung to fame last summer after attempting to solicit sex in the men’s toilets.

David Vitter (R-LA) is equally famous for hiring prostitutes.

I wish there some kind of bell or buzzer that we, as a nation, could collectively ring (or buzz) in moments of extreme irony.

It’d relieve some of the sputtering from the cognitive dissonance.

Congressional Dems Say ‘Erhm’ on Health Care

Well, one of the most tangible differences between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appears to be flying out the Rotunda window:

Congressional Democrats are backing away from healthcare reform promises made by their two presidential candidates, saying that even if their party controls the White House and Congress, sweeping change will be difficult.

It is still seven months before Election Day, but already senior Democrats are maneuvering to lower public expectations on the key policy issue.

Well, I guess it’s back to deciding whether you’d like the white lady or the black man again. Good luck with that.

I think Wonkette put it best yesterday when they said:

A formerly “energized and optimistic” Democratic Party finds itself bored and frustrated with two candidates who can’t seem to win and can’t seem to lose.

The Cheney Impeachment Response

Heh, House Republicans tried to turn the tables on the ol’ Democrats today. House Dem, presidential candidate and elfin scamp*, Dennis Kucinich, introduced a measure to impeach Cheney, and the Democrats were barely able to avoid discussing it.

What did the White House have to say about the possible impeachment of someone who isn’t part of the executive branch?

The White House, in a statement, said Democrats were shirking responsibilities on issues such as childrens’ [sic] health insurance “and yet they find time to waste an afternoon on an impeachment vote against the vice president. … This is why Americans shake their head in wonder about the priorities of this Congress.”

Someday, the people are going to come for you, my friends.

* - in uncute scamp-like behavior - did you know that until a week after announcing his 2004 presidential bid Dennis Kucinich was anti-choice? This includes voting to ban late term abortions without health of the mother stipulations and supporting the global gag rule. Far left indeed.

Schumer Backs Mukasey

Being the knee-jerk liberal that I am, a small “what?!” escaped my lips this morning when I read that Schumer (D-NY) and Feinstein (D-CA) would support Bush’s nominee for Attorney General, virually assuring success in both the Judiciary Committee and the full Senate.

Reading Schumer’s rationale, however, I have to agree with him. And it’s not just because he doesn’t make his bed.

If the Senate refuses Mukasey, Bush could appoint yet another interim Attorney General without Senate approval. He could appoint someone horrible and coast to the finish line, waterboarding everyone in sight. Schumer said:

When an administration, so political, so out of touch with the realities of governing and so contemptuous of the rule of law is in charge, we are never left with an ideal choice. Judge Mukasey is not my ideal choice. However, Judge Mukasey, whose integrity and independence is respected even by those who oppose him, is far better than anyone could expect from this administration.

They’re expecting something like a 70-30 split in the Senate if Mukasey’s nomination gets there. I don’t think there’s much profit to be had should Reid attempt to block it.

Schumer’s right - the devil you know’s better than the devil you never approved and have no control over.

The job of these Democrats I’ve been saying since before the midterm elections is to protect us from the Administration. They’re not doing that amazingly, to be sure, but this is a situation of least bad. If they can prevent anything utterly ridiculous from happening - say, oh I don’t know, invading Iran - I think we have to view this Congress as a success. Imagine what’d be going on with a Republican majority.

Also, Schumer blatantly steals George Miller’s cereal, and that’s adorable.

Pelosi Reigns, With Hubby’s Approval…

Call me a raving feminist bitch, but doesn’t one of these sentences strike you a touch condescending?

Pelosi received a boost this week when several of the bill’s most consistent critics said they would not pressure members to vote against it, even though they would oppose it themselves.

The vote was considered a personal victory for the new speaker, whose husband watched the debate Friday from the gallery overlooking the House floor.

Anti-war groups remained divided on whether passage of the bill was a good thing, and protesters tried to disrupt debate Friday and pressure members to oppose the bill.

Here’s a hint: It’s the middle one.

Shockingly, a (briefish) Google search failed to yield a mention of Denny Hastert or Newt Gingrich’s wives nodding with approval as their other halves made good. I’m glad Pelosi’s husband was there to support his wife, but I don’t consider it a newsworthy item. I’m sure lots of Congressional spouses attend during important votes, yet Pelosi’s “personal victory” is tied to her husband’s presence and apparent approval. I’m sure a feminist scholar could delve more deeply into that, but all I’m left with is a touch of gall in the back of my throat. Then again, I haven’t brushed my teeth yet this morning, so…

The Google search, however, did yield lots of mentions of Gingrich’s infidelity. Oh by the way, I’m going to post something even angrier when I wake up a bit more.
