Kliff Kingsbury

Kliff Kingsbury (born August 9, 1979) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach at Texas Tech University. Kingsbury was born in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1997. He then attended Texas Tech University, where he played quarterback for the Red Raiders from 1998 to 2002.

Kingsbury was born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in New Mexico. He played college football for Texas Tech Red Raiders football team. After he graduated, he became a coach at his alma mater.

College Career

Kliff Timothy Kingsbury (born August 9, 1979) is an American football coach and former quarterback. He is currently the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously the head coach at Texas Tech University, his alma mater. Kingsbury played college football for Texas Tech from 1998 to 2002, when he was a two-time All-American and led the nation in passing yards as a junior in 2001. Kingsbury held several NCAA, Big 12 Conference and Texas Tech passing records when his playing career ended.

NFL Career

Kingsbury was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was released by the Patriots before appearing in a game, and signed with the Denver Broncos. He was inactive for all but one game with the Broncos during his lone season with the team.

Texas Tech

The current head football coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders is Matt Wells. He was hired on November 29, 2018. He is a native of Utah and played college football at Utah State.

Record

In his six seasons at Texas Tech, Kingsbury has compiled a 35–40 record. In 2013, the Red Raiders went 8–5 and finished tied for third in the Big 12 Conference. They defeated Minnesota in the 2013 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. In 2014, Texas Tech again went 8–5 and finished tied for sixth in the conference. The Red Raiders were invited to play in the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl which they lost to Louisiana Tech.

Notable Wins

Texas Tech has had some recent success under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. In 2013, the Red Raiders went 8-5, which included a win over then-No. 14 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. The next season, Texas Tech went 4-0 to open the season and cracked the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2009. The Red Raiders would go on to finish 8-5 that year and defeat No. 14 LSU in the 2014 Extraco Events Texas Bowl.

Notable Losses

Texas Tech has had several head coaches in its football program’s history, including some who have led the team to notable success. Here are three of the most disappointing losses in recent memory:

-In 2012, Texas Tech lost to TCU in the Big 12 Championship game. This was a crushing defeat, as the Red Raiders had been undefeated in conference play and were heavy favorites to win the title.

-In 2015, Texas Tech lost to Baylor in the regular season finale. This loss kept the Red Raiders out of the Big 12 Championship game, and ultimately cost them a spot in the College Football Playoff.

-In 2016, Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma State in the final game of the regular season. This loss not only kept the Red Raiders out of the Big 12 Championship game, but also prevented them from appearing in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
