Texas Tech has had some recent success under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. In 2013, the Red Raiders went 8-5, which included a win over then-No. 14 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. The next season, Texas Tech went 4-0 to open the season and cracked the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2009. The Red Raiders would go on to finish 8-5 that year and defeat No. 14 LSU in the 2014 Extraco Events Texas Bowl.
Texas Tech has had several head coaches in its football program’s history, including some who have led the team to notable success. Here are three of the most disappointing losses in recent memory:
-In 2012, Texas Tech lost to TCU in the Big 12 Championship game. This was a crushing defeat, as the Red Raiders had been undefeated in conference play and were heavy favorites to win the title.
-In 2015, Texas Tech lost to Baylor in the regular season finale. This loss kept the Red Raiders out of the Big 12 Championship game, and ultimately cost them a spot in the College Football Playoff.
-In 2016, Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma State in the final game of the regular season. This loss not only kept the Red Raiders out of the Big 12 Championship game, but also prevented them from appearing in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
